Unai Emery has been fired as Arsenal head coach, with Freddie Ljungberg installed as the club’s interim head coach.

Arsenal’s executives, with the support of Josh Kroenke, have pulled the trigger on the Spaniard after the club produced their worst run of results since 1992.

Thursday night’s defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt was Arsenal’s seventh consecutive match without a victory.

Josh Kroenke, the son of owner Stan, said: “Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”

Ljungberg was promoted to a role within the first team in the summer, after enjoying success with the club’s academy.

His role has been to primarily work with the club’s younger players but that brief has now been extended and the former Arsenal midfielder is set to take charge of the team at Norwich City on Sunday.
